ABOUT THE AUTHOR - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ARNOLD JOHN KAPLAN, APSA-AFIAP - - - - - - - A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR OVER 75 YEARS Back in 1928 he built his own enlarger from tin cans. By 1932 he was taking portraits of his friends and neighbors in his home-made basement studio and shooting candid photos for his high school year book. In college he became the photo editor of monthly newspaper and the annual year book and started to compete and win local and national photo contests. In business he photographed company products and designed product catalogs and brochures. He also became active in the Photographic Society Of America in 1955 and began presenting photo educational program at local camera clubs, regional camera councils, and at national photo conventions. By 1970 he was presenting all day photo seminars on "How To Create Photographs Instead Of Just Taking Snapshots" at various large photo organizations from coast to coast and in 1971 was awarded the "Associate" honor (APSA) by the Photographic Society Of America for his outstanding photographic ability and his quality photo teaching programs. In 1973 the Federation Internationale de la Photographique of Europe bestowed the high honor of Photo-Artiste (AFIAP) for his outstanding Photo Salon exhibition record. After retiring from the business world in 1978 he opened the first photography school on Cape Cod. He also started to submit his photographs to several national and international stock photo agencies and they sold his images all over the world. Today, at age 92 (2008) he is involved in Fine Art Photography and is a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Association where  his photographs and oil paintings have won top prizes in their exhibitions. Photogaphers have to be more selective than Artists, as Artists can move a tree or house to any position on their canvas, if needed. A photogapher has to work with the material in front of his camera and find the right angle to make all the component elements come together the make a pleasing or interesting photograph.

Don't be a Thanksgiving, Christmas, and summer vacation snapshot taker. Use your camera at least once a week and when you take a picture be sure to check the scene for anything that will prove disturbing in the final image, such as beer cans and newspspers in the foreground or telephone wires in the blue sky in the background.
